It was the second formation of that name raised in the United States
however the division did not go overseas and demobilized in February 1919 at Camp Dodge
and West Virginia

It was initially headquartered at Lansing
After training at Camp Beauregard

The 52nd was renumbered as the 49th in 1947 due to the centennial of the California Gold Rush
and the unit's motto was "Come out fighting"
