S. history, this coin circulated while the nation was deeply divided by the Civil War. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent features Liberty wearing a Native American headdress on the obverse and an oak wreath with shield on the reverse. The 1863 issue was struck in the copper nickel composition

which features a large "V" on the reverse
